Childcare first aid training in Adelaide: Why most courses fail (and what actually works)

Why childcare first aid training doesn’t have to be a snooze-fest

Let’s be honest, if you’re a childcare director or educator in Adelaide, your first thought when you see First Aid Renewal on the calendar is usually a heavy sigh. You’ve likely sat through years of repetitive CPR classes, often in a room with no air con, led by a grumpy instructor who treats the day like a numbers game.

We do things differently. Our head trainer, Nick, is an award-winning comedian and a South Australian Trainer of the Year finalist who believes that first aid training should be engaging, practical, and, dare we say, fun.

Nick recently sat down with Beck and Jackie on the Educator’s Edit podcast to discuss why it’s time to rethink first aid in the early childhood sector. You can listen to the full episode, Rethinking First Aid Training right here.

The event + emotion formula

Why does most training fail? Because it’s boring. Nick’s philosophy is simple: An event plus an emotion creates a long-term memory. If we can make you laugh and keep you engaged, you’re far more likely to remember what to do when the pressure is actually on.

In the podcast, Nick shares a story of a student who had to perform CPR on a bus after their training. Because the training stuck, he stepped up without hesitation, remembering one key mantra: Any CPR is better than no CPR.

Guardians of the future: Why you are the front line

For educators, there is no middleman. When something happens in a centre, it is just you and the kids. You are the guardians of the future, looking after the little guys, and that comes with massive pressure because kids are notoriously unpredictable.

Nick highlighted a sobering statistic in the episode: the survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest in Australia is only 9%. Compare that to 62% in Seattle, where they teach kids CPR from a very young age. This is why we are so passionate about First Aid for Kids. We’ve even seen 3-year-olds successfully put an educator into the recovery position, and that’s pretty cool!

Beating the freeze with life speed practice

Have you ever felt your heart race during an emergency? Science shows that once your heart rate hits 163 beats per minute, you experience tunnel vision and lose fine motor skills.

To combat this, we don't just tick a box. We use life speed scenarios. We want you to leave our course feeling fearless, not just compliant.

The most important skill for educators

During the lightning round on the podcast, Nick identified the head tilt as the biggest booboo people make in CPR. For babies and children, understanding the anatomical differences is critical. This is exactly why the HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is the gold standard for education industry.

If you’re feeling rusty or unsure, it’s probably because your previous training didn't jell for you. Don't settle for another Saturday morning snooze fest.
