The World Health Organization (WHO) is reminding everyone that seconds can save a life.

Stay safe in the water

Here are some tips from Royal Life Saving Society on how you can stay safe in the water.

💦 Enrol in swimming lessons
💦 Supervise children
💦 Check pool fences
💦 Avoid having alcohol and drugs around water
💦 Wear a lifejacket
💦 Learn CPR and First Aid

Drowning prevention

Drowning is the process of being unable to breathe usually as a result of liquid entering the lungs.

How to recognise a person drowning

  • Head is low in the water, with their mouth at water level

  • Head is tilted back with their mouth opening and closing

  • Bobbing up and down at water line with their body vertical

First aid management for drowning

  • Remove from the water

  • Send for help and plan a safe rescue

  • Call 000 for all casualties involved in a drowning incident

  • If unresponsive, assess the person on their back, unless there is an obvious obstruction

  • If unresponsive and not breathing, start CPR
